John McKinstry has been the head of Lansdowne Friends School since 2013. He graduated from Westtown School, Swarthmore College and Dickinson Law School. After eight years in law, John was drawn to return to education because he saw it is a way to change the world for the better and to ensure that children's intellectual development was instilled with strong values. After completing his Masters from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education, John taught for twenty years at Penn Charter, the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District and Westtown School.
John and his wife Nancy live in Swarthmore. He is a member of Swarthmore Friends Meeting. In his free time, John likes to bike, swim, play the piano, read and spend time with his wife, children and grandaughter, Mabel.
There are many things that brought me to Lansdowne Friends School. I love the fact that it has such excellent, dedicated teachers, a strong sense of community, and a compelling, thematically-based, experiential curriculum framed by Quaker values. I value that our program has children experiencing nature, problem-solving and respect. I love that the school sits in the middle of a walkable town with public transportation. I know that everyone is enriched by the diversity of the school.
