Last Tuesday the 1st and 2nd graders traveled to Historic RittenhouseTown, located on Monoshone Creek in Philadelphia. RittenhouseTown is the location of the first paper mill in America. The students toured the original homestead, cooked a colonial bread pudding, and made their own paper.

Colonial Cooking
The students made a traditional Bread Pudding. Each child tore up pieces of bread, used a motar and pestle to grind up cinnamon sticks, and grated some nutmeg. The classes learned about different cooking tools, bake ovens, and tending the fire.

Making Paper
Each child also made a sheet of their own paper. The students learned about the paper making tools, the materials used to make paper in Colonial times, and watermarks.
